An apple is the round, edible fruit of the apple tree, most commonly the domestic apple, Malus domestica, the most widely grown species in its genus and cultivated worldwide. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, still grows, and apples have been grown across Eurasia for thousands of years before being introduced to North America by European colonists. Because apples grown from seed differ greatly from their parent tree and often lack desired qualities, commercial and garden apple cultivars are propagated by grafting onto rootstocks rather than grown from seed. Apples also carry deep cultural significance, appearing in Norse and Greek mythology and in Christian tradition across Europe.
