Curry Powder

Curry powder is a spice blend, typically combining turmeric, coriander, cumin, fenugreek, chili and other spices, developed in Britain during the colonial era as a convenient approximation of the varied spice combinations used in Indian cooking. Unlike traditional Indian cuisine, where cooks typically blend fresh spice combinations for each specific dish, curry powder is a single standardized commercial product intended to season a wide range of dishes. Curry powder is widely used today well beyond South Asia, notably in British, Japanese and Caribbean cooking, each of which developed its own characteristic style of the blend.
