Oregano, sometimes called wild marjoram, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, native to the Mediterranean region but widely naturalized elsewhere in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, particularly the United States and Mexico. A woody perennial growing up to 90 centimeters tall, with small white, pink or light purple flowers produced in clustered spikes in summer, oregano is widely used as a culinary herb alongside its close relative sweet marjoram, and although once used in folk medicine there is no clinical evidence it provides any health or anti-disease effects.
