Arem-arem

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Arem-arem is an Indonesian Javanese snack of compressed rice cooked and wrapped inside a banana leaf in the shape of a cylinder, filled with diced vegetables, tempeh, or oncom, and sometimes minced meat or abon, or beef floss. It is often described as a smaller version of lontong with fillings, earning it the alternate name lontong isi, and is similar to lemper except that it is made with regular rice rather than sticky rice. Common in Java, it is sold in marketplaces as a type of jajan pasar, or market snack, and is frequently served at ceremonies, family gatherings, and office meetings.
