Khanom thuai

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Khanom thuai talai, usually shortened to khanom thuai, is a Thai dessert made from rice flour, coconut milk, and sugar, with optional additions of salt, egg, or pandan essence. Its name comes from thuai talai, the small ceramic cups in which it is cooked and served, and the finished dessert has two parts, a body at the bottom and a face resting on it; the body traditionally took a light brown color from coconut sugar, though modern versions use ingredients like pandan leaf for white or butterfly pea for light blue coloring. It is commonly eaten alongside boat noodles and sold at street shops, with Bangkok's Talad Nang Loeng market a notable place to find it.
