Nasi kucing, meaning cat rice in Indonesian, is a rice dish that originated in Central Java, particularly in Yogyakarta, Semarang and Surakarta, and has since spread throughout Indonesia and to Jakarta, as well as to Mecca where it is sold by Indonesian workers during the hajj. Its name refers to its small portion size, comparable to what the Javanese would serve a pet cat. It consists of a small portion of rice with toppings such as sambal, dried fish and tempeh, commonly with additions like egg, chicken or cucumber, wrapped in a banana leaf which is further wrapped in paper. It is served ready-made, hot or at room temperature, and provides roughly 100 calories per serving.
