Nasi lengko

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Nasi lengko, also called sega lengko, is a rice dish typical of Cirebon, Indramayu, Brebes, Tegal and the surrounding area on the north coast of Java. Hot white rice is topped with small pieces of fried tempeh and fried tofu, then chopped raw cucumber, boiled bean sprouts and snipped chives, and finished with peanut sauce, a pour of light soy sauce and a scatter of fried onions. The peanut sauce can be spicy or mild to taste. Aci crackers smeared with ketchup are a popular accompaniment, and the plate is usually served with five to ten sticks of satay on the side. The combination of soft rice, crisp fried protein and fresh vegetables makes it a filling meal built mostly from plant ingredients.
