Nasi tim

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Nasi tim is a Chinese Indonesian dish of steamed chicken rice. The name combines the Indonesian words for cooked rice, nasi, and steam, tim. Diced chicken and mushroom are stir-fried with garlic and seasoned with soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, sesame oil and oyster sauce, then layered over a hard-boiled egg at the bottom of a metal bowl. The bowl is filled with seasoned rice and steamed until cooked. It is kept warm in a steamer and turned out onto a plate, usually with light chicken broth and chopped leeks. Some versions use pork, fish or beef, and a baby version uses red rice with chicken liver. Its soft texture makes it a comfort food suited to young children and people recovering from illness.
