A boiled egg is a chicken egg cooked with its shell unbroken, usually by immersion in boiling water, and is a popular breakfast preparation worldwide. The heat denatures and solidifies the proteins in the white and yolk, with the white beginning to coagulate around 55 to 60 degrees Celsius and the yolk thickening near 65 degrees. A hard-boiled egg is cooked, typically for about 10 minutes, until both white and yolk solidify, and is eaten warm or cold or used as the base for dishes such as egg salad and deviled eggs. A soft-boiled egg has a partially liquid yolk, traditionally timed at around 3 minutes, and is commonly served in an egg cup with the top cut open and eaten with strips of toast called soldiers.
