Lawar is a Balinese Indonesian dish of vegetables, grated coconut and minced meat mixed with rich herbs and spices; despite its heavy vegetable content it is not vegetarian, since meat or animal blood is typically part of the recipe. A common version combines green beans, beaten eggs, coconut milk, palm sugar, grated coconut and fried shallots stir fried in coconut oil, with chicken, pork or young jackfruit as the protein and sometimes blood added for richness. It is a staple of Balinese warungs, usually served with steamed rice and roasted suckling pork, babi guling.
