A hamburger, often called a burger, consists of a patty of pan-fried or grilled ground meat, typically beef, placed inside a sliced bun, sesame seed bun, or bread roll. The patty is often served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, bacon, or chilis, and can be topped with condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish, or a special sauce often based on Thousand Island dressing. A burger topped with cheese is called a cheeseburger, and under some definitions a hamburger is itself considered a type of sandwich.

Which restaurant says it is the birthplace of the hamburger?
Louis' Lunch in New Haven says it is; the claim is disputed.
Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, says so. Its own website quotes the Library of Congress as recognizing it as the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich, and tells of a hurried customer in 1900 who asked Louis Lassen for something to eat on the go. This is the restaurant's own account, and the origin of the hamburger remains disputed, with other towns and cooks making rival claims.
