A 2020 EXARC Journal study of terracotta distillation vessels excavated at Tepe Gawra in Mesopotamia, dated to roughly 3500 BCE, among the earliest known distillation apparatus, used to extract perfumes and aromatic compounds from plant material rather than to produce drinkable alcohol.
