Bunny Chow

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Bunny chow is an Indian South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry, usually served with a side of salad. It originated among the Indian South African community of Durban, and the name is often shortened simply to a bunny in everyday conversation. Various South African communities have developed their own versions of the dish, generally made from a quarter loaf and known by other names such as skhambane, kota or shibobo. It is eaten hot as a lunch, dinner or snack, and its defining feature is the bread itself, which is hollowed to hold the curry filling and can then be torn apart and used to scoop up the remaining sauce.
