Pounded Yam

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Pounded yam, known as iyan in Yoruba, sakwara in Hausa and utara-ji in Igbo, is a Nigerian swallow food made by pounding boiled yam with a mortar and pestle until smooth. It is similar to mashed potatoes but heavier in consistency, is eaten with the hands, and is typically served with soups such as egusi, ogbono, ewedu, efo riro, okra soup or ofe nsala.
