Swiss Chard

Vegetables and Vegetable Products

Swiss chard, usually called simply chard, is a green leafy vegetable grown for its broad, often colorfully ribbed leaves and stalks. It is the same species as beetroot, Beta vulgaris, bred instead for its leaves rather than its root, and is also known as silver beet, perpetual spinach, beet spinach, seakale beet or leaf beet. The leaves and stalks are cooked by sauteing, steaming or adding to soups and stews, in a manner similar to spinach or kale.
