Australian Cuisine

Oceanian Cuisines

Australian cuisine is the food and cooking practice of Australia and its inhabitants. It has absorbed contributions and adaptations from British, European, Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Indigenous Australians developed over some 65,000 years a hunter-gatherer diet known as bush tucker, drawn from regional plants and animals. During the British colonial period from 1788 to 1900, British and Irish migrants shaped tastes, and beef cattle, sheep and wheat became staples. The gold rushes brought Italian and Chinese food, and post-war immigration from the Mediterranean, East Asia and South Asia diversified it further. Today fast food sits beside metropolitan restaurants serving local and international dishes, and fusion cooking is often called Modern Australian.
