Chickpea

Legumes and Legume Products

The chickpea, also called gram, Bengal gram, chana, garbanzo or the garbanzo bean, is an annual legume cultivated for its edible seeds and is one of the earliest cultivated legumes, with the oldest archaeological evidence for it found in Syria. High in protein, it is a key ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, used for hummus and, when soaked, coarsely ground with herbs and spices and fried into patties, for falafel; it is also central to Indian cuisine, used in salads, soups, stews and curries. In 2023, India accounted for 75 percent of global chickpea production.
