Archaeological evidence shows humans using avocados for thousands of years across Central and South America, prized for their large and unusually oily fruit, which is botanically a large berry containing a single large seed. Genome sequencing has shown that the evolution of avocados was shaped by polyploidy events and that commercial varieties have a hybrid origin; the trees are partly self-pollinating and are often propagated through grafting to maintain consistent fruit output.FactsAvocadoConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOrigin RegionWell-attestedCentral and South America, from Mexico to Peru 1AvocadoFilter Results9 entriesDish FamilyAllBurgers and Hot Dogs (1)Cold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Dips of the Americas (1)East Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Latin American and Caribbean Breads and Pastries (1)Latin American and Caribbean Starch Dishes (1)Latin American and Caribbean Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Mexican Sandwiches (1)North American Rice and Grain Dishes (1)CuisineAllAmerican Cuisine (1)Canadian Cuisine (2)Chilean Cuisine (1)Colombian Cuisine (1)Mexican Cuisine (4)Peruvian Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1697 (1)1820 (1)1845 (1)1920 (1)1950 (1)1993 (1)TraditionAllBread Baking (1)Nixtamalization (1)Format/TypeAllBurgers and Hot Dogs (1)Cold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Dips of the Americas (1)East Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Latin American and Caribbean Breads and Pastries (1)Latin American and Caribbean Starch Dishes (1)Latin American and Caribbean Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Mexican Sandwiches (1)North American Rice and Grain Dishes (1)CourseAllCondiment or Dip (1)Snack or Street Food (2)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (1)Contains Fish or Shellfish (1)Contains Meat or Poultry (1)Origin RegionAllCanada (1)Chile (1)Colombia (1)Mexico (4)Peru (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9Bandeja PaisaAvocadoCalifornia RollAvocadoCausa LimenaAvocadoCemitaAvocadoCompletoAvocadoGuacamoleAvocadoHuevos RancherosAvocadoSushi pizzaAvocadoTlayudaAvocadoConnectionsAssociated WithAvocado Oil, Ingredients Well-attested Used ByBandeja Paisa, Dishes Well-attested Source Bandeja Paisa (Wikipedia)tier 3California Roll, Dishes Well-attested Source California roll (Wikipedia)Causa Limena, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Causa limenaCemita, Dishes Well-attested Source Cemita (Wikipedia)Completo, Dishes Well-attested Guacamole, Dishes Well-attested Huevos Rancheros, Dishes Well-attested Source Huevos rancheros (Wikipedia)Nicaraguan Cuisine, Cuisines Well-attested Source Nicaraguan Cuisine (Wikipedia)Sushi pizza, Dishes Well-attested Source Sushi pizza (Wikipedia)Tlayuda, Dishes Well-attested Source Tlayuda - WikipediaIn the Other AtlasesOriginated InMexicoAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Avocado (Wikipedia)PeruAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Avocado (Wikipedia)South AmericaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Avocado (Wikipedia)Sources1.
