The fruit grows upward in clusters near the top of the plant and varies in size, color and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft starchy flesh covered by a peel. Almost all modern edible seedless cultivated bananas descend from two wild species, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana, or their hybrids, native to tropical Indomalaya and Australia and probably first domesticated in New Guinea. Bananas are now grown in 135 countries, primarily for their fruit and to a lesser extent for banana paper and textiles.FactsBananaConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Well-attestedSourced to the subject's own account8050 BCE to 4550 BCE 1Origin RegionWell-attestedSourced to the subject's own accountNew Guinea 1BananaFilter Results7 entriesDish FamilyAllCakes, Pies and Sweet Baked Goods (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)North American Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Oceanian Stews and Sauced Dishes (1)Southeast Asian Breads and Pastries (1)Southeast Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Grain Dishes (1)CuisineAllAmerican Cuisine (1)Indonesian Cuisine (2)Malaysian Cuisine (1)Swedish Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1 (1)1951 (1)1976 (1)TraditionAllStreet Food Culture (1)Format/TypeAllCakes, Pies and Sweet Baked Goods (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)North American Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Oceanian Stews and Sauced Dishes (1)Southeast Asian Breads and Pastries (1)Southeast Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Grain Dishes (1)CourseAllDessert (2)Snack or Street Food (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (2)Contains Meat or Poultry (1)Origin RegionAllBurundi (1)Great Lakes region (1)Indonesia (3)Malaysia (1)New Caledonia (1)Rwanda (1)Sweden (1)Uganda (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 7Banana cakeBananaBananas FosterBananaBougnaBananaBubur cha chaBananaFlying JacobBananaMatokeBananaNagasariBananaConnectionsUsed ByBanana cake, Dishes Well-attested Source Banana cake (Wikipedia)Bananas Foster, Dishes Well-attested Source Bananas Foster (Wikipedia)Bougna, Dishes Well-attested Source Bougna (Wikipedia)Bubur cha cha, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia, Bubur cha chaFlying Jacob, Dishes Well-attested Source Flying Jacob (Wikipedia)Matoke, Dishes Well-attested Source Matoke (Wikipedia)tier 3Nagasari, Dishes Well-attested Source Nagasari (Wikipedia)In the Other AtlasesOriginated InGuineaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Banana (Wikipedia)tier 3Sources1.
