It is extracted either mechanically, by pressing or crushing seeds, the traditional method for oils such as olive and coconut, or chemically, using a solvent such as hexane for higher yields in industrial production of oils like soybean and corn; culinary uses include cooking, frying and baking, while industrial uses include soap, cosmetics, paints, lubricants, electrical insulation and biodiesel. World production rose 125 percent between 2000 and 2020, reaching 212 million tonnes by 2022, and palm oil overtook soybean oil as the leading vegetable oil produced in 2006; the United States FDA classifies vegetable oils as generally recognized as safe.FactsVegetable OilConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Well-attestedSourced to the subject's own accountfrom 6000 BCE 1Vegetable OilFilter Results9 entriesDish FamilyAllCold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Confections and Candies (1)East Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (1)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)CuisineAllBritish Cuisine (2)Chinese Cuisine (2)Egyptian Cuisine (1)German Cuisine (1)Indian Cuisine (1)Irish Cuisine (1)Middle Eastern Cuisine (1)Nigerian Cuisine (2)Peruvian Cuisine (1)Sri Lankan Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1853 (1)1981 (1)TraditionAllStreet Food Culture (2)Format/TypeAllCold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Confections and Candies (1)East Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (1)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)CourseAllAppetizer (1)Dessert (1)Side Dish (1)Snack or Street Food (3)Origin RegionAllAfrica (1)China (2)Egypt (1)India (1)Nigeria (2)Peru (1)United Kingdom (1)West Africa (1)Yorubaland (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9AkaraVegetable OilHome FriesVegetable OilKosharyVegetable OilMurukkuVegetable OilPapa a la HuancaínaVegetable OilPotato waffleVegetable OilPuff-PuffVegetable OilShuizhuVegetable OilSnow Skin MooncakeVegetable OilConnectionsAssociated WithCorn Oil, Ingredients Well-attested Used ByAkara, Dishes Well-attested Source Akara (Wikipedia)tier 2Home Fries, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Home friesKoshary, Dishes Well-attested Source Koshary (Wikipedia)Murukku, Dishes Well-attested Source Murukku (Wikipedia)Papa a la Huancaína, Dishes Well-attested Source Papa a la huancaína (Wikipedia)Potato waffle, Dishes Well-attested Source Potato waffle (Wikipedia)Puff-Puff, Dishes Well-attested Source Puff-puff (Wikipedia)Shuizhu, Dishes Well-attested Source Shuizhu (Wikipedia)Snow Skin Mooncake, Dishes Well-attested Source Snow skin mooncake (Wikipedia)Sources1.
