It is usually produced through a double fermentation, first converting simple sugars to ethanol using yeast and then converting the ethanol to acetic acid using acetic acid bacteria, with many distinct types made depending on the source material used. Today vinegar is used mainly as a flavorful, acidic cooking ingredient, salad dressing or pickling agent, with particular types such as balsamic and malt vinegar used as condiments or garnishes, and as an easily manufactured mild acid it also serves a variety of industrial and domestic uses, including as a household cleaner.FactsVinegarConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsPartially AttestedEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Partially Attested3000 BCE 1Source gives the date as an approximation, around 3000 BCE, rather than a precise year.Origin RegionPartially AttestedBabylon (Mesopotamia) 1Source gives the date as an approximation, around 3000 BCE, rather than a precise year.VinegarFilter Results9 entriesDish FamilyAllEuropean Dips and Spreads (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)North American Breads and Pastries (2)Pasta and Potato Salads (1)Southeast Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Southeast Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)CuisineAllAmerican Cuisine (2)Filipino Cuisine (2)Indonesian Cuisine (1)Italian Cuisine (1)South African Cuisine (1)Spanish Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1800 (1)TraditionAllCacao Fermentation and Chocolate Making (1)Street Food Culture (1)Tapas Culture (1)Format/TypeAllEuropean Dips and Spreads (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)North American Breads and Pastries (2)Pasta and Potato Salads (1)Southeast Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Southeast Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)CourseAllAppetizer (1)Condiment or Dip (1)Dessert (2)Main Course (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (3)Contains Fish or Shellfish (1)Contains Meat or Poultry (2)Origin RegionAllAncient Rome (1)Andalusia (1)Indonesia (1)Italy (1)Philippines (2)Sri Lanka (1)United States (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9Chicken inasalVinegarFrikkadelVinegarIgadoVinegarMoretumVinegarPasta SaladVinegarPatatas a lo pobreVinegarPempekVinegarRed Velvet CakeVinegarVinegar PieVinegarConnectionsUsed ByChicken inasal, Dishes Well-attested Source Chicken inasal (Wikipedia)Frikkadel, Dishes Well-attested Source Frikkadel (Wikipedia)Igado, Dishes Well-attested Source Igado (Wikipedia)Moretum, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia, MoretumPasta Salad, Dishes Well-attested Source Pasta Salad (Wikipedia)Patatas a lo pobre, Dishes Well-attested Source Patatas a lo pobre (Wikipedia)Pempek, Dishes Well-attested Source Pempek (Wikipedia)Pickling, Culinary Techniques Well-attested Source Pickling (Wikipedia)Red Velvet Cake, Dishes Well-attested Source Red velvet cake (Wikipedia)Vinegar Pie, Dishes Well-attested Source Vinegar pie (Wikipedia)Sources1.
