Nasi kuning

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Nasi kuning is a fragrant Indonesian rice dish associated with Javanese culture, believed to date to the Majapahit period around the thirteenth century. Rice is cooked with coconut milk and turmeric, often with pandan leaves and lemongrass and sometimes cinnamon, cardamom, cloves or bay leaves, producing the dish's characteristic yellow color, understood to symbolize wealth and prosperity through its association with gold and ripe rice. It is considered an auspicious food, traditionally served at weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, community rituals and independence day celebrations, as well as for breakfast, usually accompanied by fried chicken, shredded omelette, spicy fried tempeh, shrimp, potato fritters and various relishes.
