Funeral and memorial foods are the dishes served at wakes, after burials and at later remembrance ceremonies. In many cultures food and drink were thought to nourish the dead on the journey to the other world, and the shared meal also strengthens family and community in the face of death. Customs include boiled wheat memorial dishes in Orthodox communities, cold meals for mourners in Britain, and casseroles, cakes and soups brought to a bereaved household. This tradition gathers the dishes whose own descriptions say they are served at funerals, wakes or memorial gatherings.
