The Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus, is a cold-water fish in the salmon family Salmonidae, native to alpine lakes as well as Arctic and subarctic coastal waters across the Holarctic, and is considered the world's most northerly freshwater fish, with some populations migrating between fresh and salt water. Its coloring varies widely, with a dark dorsal side and a ventral side ranging from red to yellow to white, and it shows marked size variation, with dwarf forms weighing 0.2 to 2.3 kilograms, giant forms 2.3 to 4.5 kilograms, and some individuals exceeding 9 kilograms. It ranges across the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Siberia and Alaska, living in freshwater alpine lakes as well as coastal marine waters.
