Bombay duck, also called bummalo, is a species of lizardfish, Harpadon nehereus, typically about 25 centimeters long though it can reach 40 centimeters. It inhabits the tropical Indo-Pacific with a discontinuous distribution along the Indian coast, most prominently off Maharashtra and Gujarat in the Lakshadweep Sea, and is also caught in smaller numbers in the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea. Traditionally the small fish was coated in asafoetida and dried in the sun, becoming strongly pungent, and when fried and crumbled this preparation became a popular condiment in Anglo-Indian cuisine; its pungent dried form has at times faced import restrictions in parts of Europe.
