Breadnut most often refers to the seed of Brosimum alicastrum, a tree native to Mexico, Central America, parts of northern and western South America and the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Jamaica, also known as ramon, ojoxitli or Maya nut. The tree belongs to the same family as figs and mulberries, and its starchy seeds are theorized to have been a staple food crop for the ancient Maya civilization. The name breadnut is also applied to a different, closely related tree, Artocarpus camansi, a close relative of the breadfruit, so the common name can refer to either seed depending on the region.
