The bunya nut is the large, starchy seed of the bunya pine, Araucaria bidwillii, a tree native to the subtropical rainforests of southeastern Queensland, Australia. Each cone, which can weigh several kilograms, holds dozens of nuts about the size of a large chestnut. Bunya nuts have been a significant traditional food of Aboriginal Australian peoples of the region, historically gathered at large seasonal harvest gatherings and eaten roasted or boiled, or ground into a flour-like meal.
