Cantaloupe is a variety of muskmelon, Cucumis melo, identified by its rough, netted rind and orange, fragrant flesh. The name covers two related but distinct fruits: the European cantaloupe, with a harder, warty rind rarely grown commercially outside Europe, and the North American cantaloupe, the netted muskmelon most familiar in United States and Canadian markets. Cantaloupe is eaten fresh, typically halved or cubed, and is a common addition to fruit salads, smoothies and breakfast plates, valued for its high water content, sweetness and vitamin A.
