Chinquapin, also called the Allegheny chinquapin, American chinquapin or dwarf chestnut, is Castanea pumila, a species of chestnut native to the southeastern United States, ranging from Massachusetts and New York south to Florida and west to Texas. Each cupule contains one shiny dark brown nut that is edible, and the nuts can be blanched, dried and rehydrated to be prepared as food. Native Americans historically used the tree and its nuts, recorded as early as an English colonist's 1612 account.
