The durian is the edible fruit of several tree species in the genus Durio, of which there are 30 recognized species, at least nine producing edible fruit; Durio zibethinus, native to Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, is the only species available on the international market and has over 300 named varieties in Thailand and over 200 in Malaysia as of 2021. Known in some regions as the king of fruits, the durian is distinctive for its large size, strong odor and thorn-covered rind, growing as large as 30 centimeters long and 15 centimeters in diameter and typically weighing 1 to 3 kilograms, with a shape ranging from oblong to round, a husk from green to brown, and flesh from pale yellow to red depending on the species.
