Edamame is an East Asian dish of immature soybeans in their pods, boiled or steamed and served with salt or other condiments, its name literally meaning stem beans in Japanese, from eda, branch or stem, and mame, bean, recalling when the beans were sold still attached to their stems. It is a common side dish in Chinese and Japanese cuisine and a frequent appetizer alongside alcoholic drinks such as beer or shochu, and it also appears as an ingredient in dishes including takikomi gohan, tempura and zunda-mochi; beans removed from the pod are sometimes called mukimame in Japanese. Though rooted in East Asia, edamame is now consumed in many parts of the world.
