The gevuina nut, also called the Chilean hazelnut, is the seed of Gevuina avellana, an evergreen tree native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and adjoining Argentina. Despite the common name, it is not a true hazelnut but a member of the protea family, Proteaceae, with a similarly rich, buttery flavor once roasted. The nut is eaten in traditional Chilean and Mapuche cooking and its oil, high in unsaturated fats, is also pressed for culinary and cosmetic use.
