Grapefruit

Fruits and Fruit Products

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its relatively large, sour to semi-sweet, somewhat bitter fruit, whose segmented flesh varies in color from pale yellow to dark red. Grapefruits originated in Barbados in the 18th century as a citrus hybrid, an accidental cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo, both introduced to the Caribbean from Asia in the 17th century, and the fruit was formerly called the pomelo, a term now mostly reserved for Citrus maxima itself. Grapefruit is notable for common interactions with medications, since its juice contains furanocoumarins that interfere with the metabolism of many drugs, potentially prolonging and intensifying their effects.
