The grasscutter, also called the greater cane rat, is one of two species of cane rats, a small family of African hystricognath rodents that live by reed-beds and riverbanks across sub-Saharan Africa. Alongside its role as an agricultural pest, the peoples of the region use the cane rat as a food source, known as bushmeat, and consider its meat a delicacy; it is a significant part of West African bushmeat consumption.
