Iguana meat comes from the green iguana, Iguana iguana, a large, arboreal, mostly herbivorous lizard, and from its relative the black iguana. The green iguana and the black iguana have been used as a food source in Central and South America for roughly the past 7,000 years, a long-standing culinary tradition alongside the species' more recent popularity as a pet.
