Jujube is the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba, a small tree native to China and cultivated across Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, also known as the Chinese date or red date because its dried form resembles a date in color and wrinkled texture. The fresh fruit is small, round to oval, with a thin skin over crisp, apple-like white flesh that turns dark and chewy as it dries. Jujube has a long history in Chinese cuisine and traditional medicine, where dried jujubes are commonly added to soups, teas and herbal remedies.
