Mamey sapote is the fruit of Pouteria sapota, a tree native to Central America and southern Mexico now cultivated throughout Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as in Florida and parts of South America. It is eaten raw across much of Latin America and is also added to smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream and other foods.
