Monkfish are various species of lophiid anglerfishes in the genus Lophius, order Lophiiformes and family Lophiidae, comprising seven recognized living species found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, characterized by highly compressed heads and bodies. Lophius piscatorius occurs in the northeast Atlantic from the Barents Sea to the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and can reach up to 200 centimeters in length, while Lophius americanus ranges the western Atlantic from Newfoundland and Quebec south to northern Florida. Lophius piscatorius and Lophius budegassa, found in north-western Europe, are the species referred to commercially as monkfish, with Lophius piscatorius the more commercially significant of the two; the liver is particularly prized in Japanese cuisine, prepared as the delicacy ankimo.
