The mopane worm is the large, edible caterpillar of Gonimbrasia belina, a species of emperor moth native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, also known as madora, amacimbi, pigeon moth or masonja. It feeds primarily but not exclusively on mopane tree leaves and is an important source of protein for many people in the region.
