Palm kernel is the edible seed found inside the fruit of the oil palm, distinct from the fleshy outer layer of the same fruit that yields ordinary palm oil. The fruit therefore produces two separate oils: palm oil pressed from the fibrous outer pulp, and palm kernel oil extracted from the kernel itself, which has a different fatty acid profile closer to coconut oil. Palm kernel oil is widely used in food manufacturing, confectionery and cosmetics, and palm kernel cultivation is concentrated in the tropical growing regions of Southeast Asia and West Africa.
