Pompano is the common name for marine fish of the genus Trachinotus, family Trachinotidae, deep-bodied and laterally flattened fish with a rounded profile, sickle-shaped dorsal and anal fins, and no teeth. Most of the genus's twenty-one recognized species are small, though the largest can reach roughly 1.2 meters, and they inhabit warm ocean waters worldwide, sometimes venturing into brackish water. Most pompano species are valued as food fish, while some, including the permit, are prized game fish for anglers; the Florida pompano is the best-known food species in American cooking, often broiled or grilled whole.
