Rambutan is the fruit of Nephelium lappaceum, a tree native to Southeast Asia and closely related to lychee and longan. Its name comes from the Malay word for hair, describing the soft, hair-like spines covering the fruit's red or pink skin. Beneath the skin is a translucent, juicy white flesh surrounding a single seed, similar in texture and sweet-tart flavor to lychee, eaten fresh or canned in syrup.
