Snapper is the common name for Lutjanidae, a family of about 113 species of percomorph fish, mostly marine but with some members living in estuaries and occasionally fresh water. They inhabit tropical, subtropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, typically near coral reefs at depths to about 100 meters, with some species found as deep as 500 meters, and most grow to around a meter in length, though the cubera snapper reaches up to 1.52 meters. Most snappers are active carnivores that feed on crustaceans or fish, and most species are used for food, with many of high economic importance; numerous unrelated species worldwide are locally called red snapper, reflecting the group's commercial prominence.
