Whelks are carnivorous sea snails with a spiral, tapered shell, most belonging to the family Buccinidae, that live on the seafloor and feed by drilling through the shells of prey such as mussels and other shellfish. As food, whelk meat is chewy and mildly briny, and is prepared braised, grilled, boiled or pickled, appearing in dishes such as Japanese tsubu-gai and Korean golbaengi-muchim, a spicy whelk salad, as well as in traditional coastal cooking of the British Isles, where common whelk from the North Atlantic is a long-established seafood. The exact species called whelk varies by region, with different local sea snails carrying the name in different culinary traditions.
