Banh chung is a traditional Vietnamese rice cake made of glutinous rice, mung beans, pork and other ingredients, wrapped in leaves and boiled or steamed into a square shape. According to legend it was created by Prince Lang Lieu to win the succession to the throne, its square form representing the earth, paired with a round cake representing the sky. The cake holds deep cultural importance in Vietnam as an essential part of the family altar during Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year, when families prepare and eat it together as a way of honoring their ancestors.
