Bakpia

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Bakpia, known as hopia in the Philippines, is a bean filled, moon cake like pastry popular in both Indonesia and the Philippines, with origins traced to Fujianese immigrant communities in both countries. It is made in two main styles: a flaky version using Chinese style puff pastry, and a cake like dough more common in the Philippines. Traditional fillings include mung bean, pork, purple yam and azuki bean, while modern versions add flavors such as cappuccino, cheese, chocolate and durian. It is sold widely as an inexpensive snack and a popular gift.
