Currywurst

Currywurst is a German fast food dish of sliced pork sausage served with curry ketchup, a sauce of tomato ketchup or a similar base seasoned with curry powder. It was invented in 1949 by Herta Heuwer, who began selling it from a food stand in the Charlottenburg district of West Berlin after obtaining ketchup and curry powder from British soldiers stationed in the city and mixing them with other spices to pour over grilled sausage. The dish quickly became popular with the construction workers rebuilding postwar Berlin, and at the height of her stand's popularity Heuwer was selling around 10,000 servings a week; she patented her own sauce recipe under the name Chillup in 1951 and ran a restaurant until 1974. Currywurst remains one of Germany's most widely eaten street foods, with the Deutsches Currywurst Museum estimating around 800 million servings eaten across the country each year, about 70 million of them in Berlin alone.
