Fried Bread

Fried bread is a slice of bread fried in oil, butter, lard, bacon drippings or ghee, used as an alternative to toast for the extra flavor and crispness frying gives. Regional versions include Brazil's rabanada, a Portuguese-derived Christmas dish with sweet seasonings; the Czech Republic's topinky, a pan-fried bread traditionally made to use up stale loaves; Britain and Ireland's fried bread as part of a full breakfast, including soda farls in Northern Ireland's Ulster fry; Italy's pane fritto, dipped in milk before frying; Japan's agepan, deep-fried bread rolls coated with sugar or kinako and popular in school lunches; and, in the United States, French toast as the dominant form alongside plain buttered fried bread.
