Kaiserschmarrn, also spelled Kaiserschmarren, meaning emperor's mess, is a lightly sweetened, fluffy shredded pancake that takes its name from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph the First, who was fond of it, served as either a dessert or a light lunch. It remains a popular meal or dessert in Austria, Bavaria and many parts of the former Austro-Hungarian empire, including northern Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, northern Croatia and western Romania, which use the name as a loanword or its translation.
