Mandazi is a form of fried bread that originated on the Swahili coast of East Africa, also known as bofrot or puff-puff in West African countries such as Ghana and Nigeria. It is one of the principal dishes of the Swahili people of coastal Kenya and Tanzania, popular because it is convenient to make, can be eaten with almost any food or dip or as a snack by itself, and can be saved and reheated later. In Somali cuisine the same pastry is called bur, meaning flour or dough, and is a staple during the Iftar meal in Ramadan, often served alongside samosas.
